Description

This course will address the increased incidence of all forms of child abuse and neglect experienced in American society.  Law enforcement plays an integral part in all areas of child abuse and neglect:  initially, officers may be called to a reported incident or may have to investigate specific allegations.  Perhaps the most involvement law enforcement has with child abuse and neglect is attending to the aftermath of the abuse when the children grow older and commit crimes.  Most criminals have been abused or neglected as children.  Understanding the trauma history provides law enforcement with the back story of the person, thus assisting them with the process of law enforcement.

Special group issues will be addressed throughout the day, such as the added trauma and stress experienced by LGBTQ youth.  Trauma and victim services, as well as recent changes in juvenile law, will be presented and discussed.  This training will benefit police, corrections, protective services, and probation.
