Description

No public safety organization can function without good first-line supervisors. The first-line supervisor is the most influential position within the organization. First-line supervisors have a major impact on the personnel they supervise, and are crucial to the implementation of any policies or directives from upper management. First-line supervisors communicate the values and standards of the organization to the men and women under their supervision, are the most direct management contact with the public, and lead the daily work of the organization. The first-line supervisor role, therefore, demands strong leadership, self-confidence, competence, management skills, and an understanding of how to influence their subordinates, the organization, and the community.

The course will provide attendees with the knowledge necessary to lead well in the first-line supervisor role within a public safety organization. It will cover such topics as basic leadership principles, ethics in leadership, verbal communication skills, employee coaching and counseling techniques, evidence-based police field supervision techniques, addressing problem employees, sources of legal liability, and officer mental and physical wellness. Taught by a cadre of instructors who all possess graduate degrees and a mixture of legal or law enforcement field experience, this course is designed for any new leaders, experienced leaders wanting a refresher course, and any officer, deputy, trooper, or detective interested in moving into a leadership role in their organization.

This rigorous course will require participants to engage in in-class practical exercises to practice the skills they are being taught. Students must complete a comprehensive written final course review to earn their certificates of completion. These standards help ensure that students leave the program transformed and equipped to lead with confidence within their organizations.

This course is co-sponsored by Mobile Team Units 8 and 12.  All course costs will be shared by the sponsoring MTUs.
