Description

This course will give members of law enforcement and criminal justice agencies a better understanding of how changing demographics impact community services. Because policing today is more multi-cultural, law enforcement agencies must ensure that their officers are trained to handle changing neighborhoods in innovative ways. The instructor, a veteran street officer and supervisor, will present a practical and dynamic program that will challenge participants to explore contemporary diversity issues in an open training environment.

Topics

  • How changing demographics affect police services
  • Examining personal perceptions of groups & understanding personal value systems
  • How our “mental models” impact the way we profile individuals
  • The true meaning of Cultural Competency and Procedural Justice
  • Understanding how diversity affects law enforcement and the concept of Community Policing
  • Recognizing the role of teamwork in building strong communities
  • Understanding how personal leadership impacts an officer’s ability to work in a diverse community
  • Why diversity is more about “getting ahead” — than getting along
