Vehicle Stops Refresher

This course is certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.

Description

This one-day course will be taught by University of Illinois Police Training Institute certified instructors. Instruction will focus on high-risk stops, arrest situations, and response tactics for both compliant and non-compliant occupants. The course features a scenario-based approach facilitated by instructors and role players. Stations with different scenarios will be organized to allow participants to work in small groups.

Topics

Unknown Risk Vehicle Stops:

• Initiating the stop  (choosing location; vehicle positioning)
• Tactical approach  (surroundings; observation points)
• Safety procedures when returning to squad car/violator’s vehicle
• Learning how circumstances dictate tactics

Known Risk Vehicle Stops:

• Proper vehicle positioning
• Proper use of lighting
• Suspect management
• Coordination with back-up officers
• Clearing the suspect vehicle
